Barshasketh – Sitra Achra

Naming a raw atmospheric black metal album after a popular brand of hot sauce would probably not be advisable unless you were Immortal so it is for the best that they didn’t. Turns out Sitra Achra describes the inner conflict between morality & base instinct in the Jewish mystical text, the Zohar. You wouldn’t get that level of fact checking in Metal Hammer now would you, my friends! So Barshasketh‘s second album, The No Feeling comes all the way from New Zealand with a brief de-tour through Scotland to pick up a full lineup.

Gareeda – Gareeda

Remember when things started with a riff? It seems the kids of today consider them an afterthought, a way of connecting their flashy solos & mindless breakdowns but consider this: You set out to make a lovely lasagne & everything is ready when, at the last second, you realise you’ve got no meat. You have neither the time nor requisite ability to fetch some nice lean mince so you make do with the only thing you can find in the house, dog faeces. From the exterior, things look good. The top is nice & crispy, the layers are perfect but none of this changes the fact that your base ingredient is shit.

Dying Fetus – Reign Supreme

If you were to take all things as being 100% consistent, Leave the Hall should not like Dying Fetus one bit. With as much slam as a Hulk Hogan 20 DVD career retrospective and more breakdowns than the infamous 1978 Lada owners club winter trip across Siberia, they comprise everything that we have slated bands like Waking the Cadaver and Job For A Cowboy for in the past. However, one thing we are not is consistent, and anyway, it’s not poor old Dying Fetus’ fault that a bunch of utter, utter tossers have decided to take a good thing and spoil it now, is it? It’s a bit like that Swastika tattoo I have on my left bum cheek that is totally a Hindu thing but people completely take the wrong way due to the reckless and irresponsible actions of the Nazi Party.

Adrenaline Mob – Omerta

“…. and you’ll let me play mediocre hard rock?” sobbed the pathetic figure sat by the side of the road, tattered trainers absorbing rainwater from the gutter. “I don’t have to play poly-rhythms any more?”

Machine Head – Unto The Locust

Personally I like to top my shit sandwiches with a vomit mayo and a dash of grated cock meat but each to their own. Machine Head will doubtless have their own ideas, presented for us now and probably involving a combination of awkwardly composed choruses and poorly conceived rapping. Though Robb Flynn‘s promises of classical guitar lessons and technical ecstasy have at least mildly intrigued me…

Mastodon – The Hunter

It’s come that time again, folks. I’ve crawled out from under my rock to hurl incoherent abuse at another poor old metal band who’ve committed the cardinal sin of doing something different. So what have they done to get me riled up enough to pull my shit encrusted fingers from my battered ringpiece & bother my keyboard? Wearing the wrong shoes? Not knowing the correct dance moves to Warriors of the World? Have an incomplete 180gm vinyl discography of Manilla Road? Let’s find out, shall we?

Anthrax – Worship Music

The accepted divergence point for Anthrax fans is the 1992 departure of charismatic front-man, Joey Belladonna. His firing marked a further shift towards darker, more straight-faced heavy metal which distinguished Persistence of Time from earlier material so the question is this. After 19 years in the thankless wastelands of solo recording, will his glorious return unite fans old & new in a golden era of peace, love & tongue-in-cheek thrash? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

Origin – Entity

Origin more or less set the benchmark when it comes to ridiculous death metal. Faster than an espresso fuelled gravity-blasting cheetah, their last few releases have established them as the most consistent purveyors of first class brutality and the go to men when you simply must have your internal organs scrambled into a lumpy red smoothie as soon as possible.
