Reitermania Finally Hits Britain
It is 15 years since the criminally underrated Die Apokalyptischen Reiter formed & it’s only now that they get a UK headlining tour. Making up for lost time, the German nutcases decided to blast through a set which leaned heavily towards to last 2 albums. I can’t help but feel that the show would have benefited from a couple more of their classics. Licked By The Tounges Of Pride, Reitermania & Unter Der Asche almost made up for the absence of anything from their 2004 masterpiece, Samurai.
Reiter are used to playing to much larger crowds at home than over here but that didn’t stop them bringing the sex swing, inflatable boats & flaming torches, causing much anxiety to the poor roadies as flames licked the wall-mounted bass drum. Their exacting requirements caused the venue to have to set up a second sound desk which paid off with the end result being the sonic equivalent of a blow job on a summer’s day.
Minor complaints about the setlist don’t mar a thoroughly enjoyable gig & although Die Apokalyptischen Reiter are far more suited to a large field in Germany in early August, they handle themselves admirably on a club tour. It is encouraging to see a genuinely unique band getting a crack at the UK without having to support fucking Trivium.
