The questionable decision of putting Tyrants on 10 minutes after doors open meant that they began their set to an empty room, probably. I wouldn’t know, I was stuck behind a couple of junior Schrödingers who were trying to establish whether thrash was a subgenre of metal or not whilst their bags were searched for Glenns & books on quantum mechanics. Anyway, the second half of their set served as a timely reminder that they need get an album out. To a good majority of the crowd, these tracks are as well known as the headliners & the big sweaty man mess in the middle of room is indicative of their local hero status.

Forbidden – Omega Wave

I am something of a fairweather Forbidden fan. I view their first two releases – Forbidden Evil and Twisted Into Form as two of the finest metal albums ever released into the world and, well, I couldn’t give a flying fuck about 1994′s Distortion and 1997′s Green. In fact I totally forgot about them until I was doing my usual thorough review research on Wikipedia. Luckily I hadn’t forgotten about the band themselves, and I had been seriously looking forward to their new album, believing it would be among the strongest thrash-reunion-comeback-albums™ released to date.

The Absence – Enemy Unbound

The Absence return after what seems like far longer than the 3 years it’s been since Riders Of The Plague, their 2nd album, pushed them to the forefront of the melodic death/thrash/music picture, establishing themselves as the smart alternative to the Arch Enemies of this world and becoming firm Leave the Hall favourites in the process. Naturally the question must be asked; after such a hotly anticipated build-up, will they choke like Michael Hutchence or gloriously unleash a pent up torrent of creamy metal musical ejaculate into our lives?

Sabbat – Ivory Blacks, Glasgow 18/08/2010

I was unaware that International Talk Like A Pirate Day had come around again (not really, you dullard) until Achren’s set. “You are a sorry excuse for a crowd compared with Bloodstock!” barks vocalist Scott, in his best buccaneer tones, to which he receives the sage response, “It’s the same fucking crowd, ya baw!” It’s true, looking around Ivory Blacks, about half of the crowd were packed into the New Blood tent on Saturday morning. It is also true that the crowd were a good deal less enthusiastic but that might have something to do with post-festival malaise.

Taken from last year’s brilliantly named yet slightly disappointing Massive Aggressive, Acid Sentence is Municipal Waste doing what they do best. It’s actually an exclusive debut to a site that’s not this one but I suspect that is an oversight on their part, rather than an intentional snub. Anyway, we nicked it & present it here for your audiovisual pleasure. It’s a bit of a gorefest, just the way we like things.

Buried Pleasure: Toxik – Think This

This makes absolute sense as the first album for me to review for our forgotten or overlooked classics section, as the ratio of genius to actual recognition is so phenomenally high (approximately a billion trillion to one at last count). Toxik are the kings of the overlooked thrash bands, the ones that sat 2 divisions below the big 4 but no-one really knows why. They burned brightly at the end of the 80’s, releasing two albums before breaking up in ’92, though they have since reformed and I await new material like some sort of thrash metal gimp chained in their cellar. For some, Toxik’s first album, 1987’s awesome World Circus, is their finest, but for me it is all about 1989’s follow up – Think This.
